چکیده

We present high signal-to-noise Keck spectra for 10 globular clusters associated with the giant Fornax elliptical NGC 1399, and compare measured line indices with current stellar population models. Our data convincingly demonstrate, for the first time, that at least some of the clusters in a giant elliptical galaxy have super-solar abundance ratios, similar to the host galaxy. From Hβ line-strengths the majority of clusters have ages of ∼11 Gyrs (within 2σ), which is similar to the luminosity-weighted stellar age of NGC 1399. Two of the clusters (which also reveal enhanced abundance ratios) show significantly higher Hβ values than the others. It remains unclear whether this is due to young (∼ 2 Gyr) ages, or extremely old (> 15 Gyr) ages with a warm blue horizontal branch. However a conflict with current cosmological parameters is avoided if the young age is favored. Either alternative indicates a complicated age distribution among the metal-rich clusters and sets interesting constraints on their chemical enrichment at late epochs. Subject headings: globular clusters: general – galaxies: individual (NGC 1399) – galaxies: star clusters.

Ultra Compact Objects in the Fornax Cluster of Galaxies: Globular clusters or dwarf galaxies?

The relation between the Ultra Compact Objects (hereafter UCOs) recently discovered in the Fornax cluster (Drinkwater et al. 2000a, Hilker et al. 1999) and the brightest globular clusters associated with the central galaxy NGC 1399 has been investigated. The question was adressed whether the UCOs constitute a distinct population of objects not linked to globular clusters or whether there is a s...

HST Imaging of the Globular Clusters in the Fornax Cluster: Color and Luminosity Distributions

We examine the luminosity and B − I color distribution of globular clusters for three early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster using imaging data from the Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope. The luminosity functions we derive are in most cases better than 50% complete down to B = 26.6. We find that the color distributions of globular clusters in the central region of N...

Evidence for a Stellar Disruption by an Imbh in an Extragalactic Globular Cluster1

We report [O III] λ5007 Å and [N II] λ6583 Å emission from a globular cluster harboring the ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX) CXOJ033831.8-352604 in the Fornax elliptical galaxy NGC 1399. No accompanying Balmer emission lines are present in the spectrum. One possibility is that the forbidden lines emanate from X-ray illuminated debris of a star that has been tidally-disrupted by an intermediate-...

Dynamical evolution of globular cluster systems in clusters of galaxies : I . The case of NGC 1404 in the Fornax cluster

We investigate, via numerical simulations, the tidal stripping and accretion of globular clusters (GCs). In particular, we focus on creating models that simulate the situation for the GC systems of NGC 1404 and NGC 1399 in the Fornax cluster, which have poor (specific frequency SN ∼ 2) and rich (SN ∼ 10) GC systems respectively. We initially assign NGC 1404 in our simulation a typical SN (∼ 5) ...

We present moderate-resolution Keck spectra of nine candidate globular clusters in the possible merger-remnant elliptical galaxy NGC 3610. Eight of the objects appear to be bona fide globular clusters of NGC 3610. We find that two of the clusters belong to an old metal-poor population, five to an old metal-rich population, and only one to an intermediate-age metal-rich population. The estimated...
